Enjoy Germany in Madrid

salchichas alemanasAlthough the Oktoberfest festivities are already over at the Barclaycard Center in Madrid, there are still a few places in Madrid where you can enjoy some Bavarian-style culture. One of them is Mantequería Alemana, which has been serving German specialities since 1952, one of the first in the Spanish capital. They say that it serves the best bratwurst in the whole of Madrid, which can be eaten at the place itself despite its old delicatessen shop appearance.  They sell sausages but also spirits, spices, cold cuts, smoked meat, tinned food and, of course, beer, such as Löwenbrau, Erdinger and the legendary Franziskaner, with its intense wheat flavour. Find it at Calle Padilla, 88 (Salamanca district).

Oldenburg is a must in all German lists in Madrid, a place that beer lovers will especially enjoy thanks to the more than 300 varieties, both Spanish and international, with daily tap suggestions. It is located on Calle Hartzenbusch, 12, in Chamberí. Every month, you can also enjoy beer tastings, which you can sign up for by e-mailing catas@oldenburgcervecería.es

There’s also a German atmosphere without it being too tacky at Krüger, a restaurant on Pasaje Martín de los Herreros, below Plaza de los Cubos. Its decoration reminisces of medieval Germanic architecture, serving an excellent assortment of German sausages such as rostbratwurst or feine Thüringer, accompanied by mashed potato, sauerkraut and jus sauce. Also, try some of the traditional specialities, such as Spätzle Käse mit Zwiebeln, a traditional baked pasta dish with Edam cheese; or the classic pork joint with a side, to share with another person for 18.25 euros.

Also famous for its pork joint is Edelweiss, on Calle Jovellanos, 7 (a stone’s throw from our 4-star hotel in Madrid). Its prices are high but not excessive but this conservatively decorated place that serves traditional German dishes is ideal for cold autumn days.
