The Lavapiés district is popular, multicultural and still has some traditional traits left in it. It is also the place to go if you want to try Indian cuisine in the city of Madrid. Just one metro stop away from Sol, Lavapiés has a never-ending list of Indian restaurants in its two most important streets, where you can eat excellent food at equally good prices.

Chicken tandoori, masala, lamb curry, samosas and all the typical Indian cuisine specialities can be found on Calle Ave María or the parallel Calle de Lavapiés. On weekends, both streets fill up with locals who go there to try some exotic gastronomic proposals. During the week, many restaurants offer lunchtime menus under 10€, with servings that are rather generous taking the price into consideration.

However, if we are looking for sophisticated Indian cuisine and a more chic atmosphere, there are different options. One of them is Tandoori Station, a peculiar Indian restaurant decorated like a train coach, with dim lights and where walls simulate windows. It is a popular and successful restaurant, so don’t hesitate on going there and book a table. They have many different chicken dishes that you can order more or less spicy and also authentic curry sauce. Prices are around 30€ per person and you can find it at number 89 of the exclusive Calle Ortega y Gasset.

Rather more central, in the Barrio de Las Letras, we have a restaurant that looks more modern, Indian Aroma (Calle Ventura de la Vega, 6), where you can choose from an assortment of no fewer than 80 dishes. Two of its best are the prawn korma, its tikka masala. Its tasting menu for 21€ is also a very interesting option.

And afterwards, go for a drink to digest all the food on any of the terraces of the neighbouring Plaza de Santa Ana -some 500 yards away from our hotel in the centre of Madrid– in order to return to the old continent after a charming and exotic gastronomic trip.
