Madrid, capital del flamenco

Despite that its origins lie in Andalusia and its roots in Jerez or Granada, it is commonly accepted that Madrid is the capital of flamenco. Tablaos and theatres have brought this art to the people of Madrid, who have as flamenco references places like Casa Patas or Corral de las Morería.

For nine years now, Madrid also has the institutional support of the regional government, since it boosted the Suma Flamenca festival, which will take place from the 3rd of June to the 4th of July. This edition will be dedicated to the figure of Paco de Lucía, who passed away in February 2014 at the age of 66. He was an undisputed reference of modern flamenco and as a tribute to him there will be a concert performed by Gerardo Núñez, Diego del Morao and Dani de Morón.

The festival offers an extensive programme with more than 425 performances in 24 different spaces. Among the artists we highlight María de Toledo in her first appearance in the festival, La Tremendita, Rocío Márquez or the jazz trio made up by Carlos Benavent, Tino di Geraldo and Jorge Pardo. Also performing will be the veteran José Mercé and Diego Carrasco.

In regards to dance, do not miss the performances of Eduardo Guerrero, José Maldonado and La Moneta, the show that is blowing Europe away.

Aside from music, it is worth coming to see one of these shows for the space they take place in, classic flamenco venues such as Café de Chinitas, Cardamomo, Villa Rosa or Corral de la Morería, as well as more modern spaces that open their doors to this traditional genre such as Matadero, that will offer cycles of film and flamenco; and the Círculo de las Bellas Artes, that will offer the 23rd Spanish Dance and Flamenco Choreography Competition.

An abundant offer of flamenco and its culture that will turn June into the month of music in Madrid. And to enjoy it if you visit the Spanish capital, one of the best options is Hotel Quatro Puerta del Sol –located in the heart of the city– from where you can get to all the main venues of these concerts and flamenco-related events in just a few minutes.
